The Tampa Bay Rays entered the 2021 MLB season with high hopes, and so far, they have not disappointed. They have set a new modern-day winning streak of 13 and tied with the 1987 Brewers and 1982 Braves for the longest winning streak at the start of the season. History might have been on the line for the Rays as they faced the Toronto Blue Jays for game two of a four-game series, but it was not meant to be. Rays’ winning streak came to an end with the Blue Jays winning the game by a 6-3 scoreline.
The Blue Jays took quick control of the game with George Springer homering in the first followed by a Bo Bichette RBI double in the second inning, extending their lead 2-0. The Rays got a run back in the fourth, and it was the bottom of the fifth when the Blue Jays took control of the game. The Blue Jays started the inning with the singles from Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed by a walk to Daulton Varsho. Tampa Bay Rays’ reliever Colin Poche walked in two runs, and Danny Jansen’s grounder scored two more. At the end of the inning, the Blue Jays were leading 6-1.
The Rays tried to make a comeback with back-to-back homers from Josh Lowe and Christian Bethancourt. However, it was too little too late. The Rays’ impressive winning streak had come to an end, but with pride in their heart, they will look to start a new streak.
The Rays had dominated the league with 11 out of their 13 games won by at least four runs, outscoring their opponents 78-20. However, critics had pointed out the Rays’ schedule and the teams they had played. Rays had not played teams that were considered to be strong enough to challenge their abilities. It was said that they faced the weakest with teams such as the Nationals, Tigers, and A’s that are currently in last place. Though, they were quick to silence critics with their recent win against the Red Sox before facing the Blue Jays.
The Tampa Bay Rays might have lost the game, but they have set the bar high and made their mark on history. If they continue to showcase their abilities in their next games, they could become a force to be reckoned with this season. The Rays will face Blue Jays again in the next game, and it will be interesting to see what they have in store for us.
