Samsung continues to disappoint its users with charging speeds as its latest flagship models, the Galaxy S23 series, charge way slower than Galaxy S22. PhoneArena conducted tests and found that all three S23 models take longer to charge via wireless charging than their S22 counterparts. The slowest charging phone in the series was the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which took 33% longer than the S22 Ultra while using the official charger. Despite having the same battery size and wireless charging speeds as the S22 Ultra, Samsung’s newest flagship model took 2 hours and 37 minutes to charge to full, compared to S22’s 1 hour and 58 minutes. The reduction in charging rate was not shown in Samsung’s spec sheet.
The slower charging speed isn’t a result of the industry’s concerns about quick charging, as experience shows that quick charging doesn’t affect battery longevity. Furthermore, other smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus, have been shipping quick charging solutions for years without damaging their batteries. Quick charging systems require proper heat management, and companies, including Chinese manufacturers, have been handling heat management effectively. Some wireless chargers include fans to dissipate charging heat, and S23 Ultra’s slow charging rates could be due to its heat dissipation problems.
Although global smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Google, and Apple lag behind fast-charging technologies, with the fastest commercial options having 50 W charging capacity, Chinese manufacturers continue to offer state-of-the-art charging capabilities. The faster charging speeds make a huge difference in how phone users interact with their smartphones. They no longer have to worry about overnight charging or spending a long time waiting to charge their phones.
In conclusion, Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra offering slow charging speeds despite having the same battery size and wireless charging speeds as its best-performing phone, the S22 Ultra, is troubling for fans of the brand. Samsung should improve the heat dissipation technology in the S23 Ultra to deliver faster and more efficient charging speeds.
