After leading the Texas Longhorns to a Big 12 Tournament title and an Elite Eight finish, Rodney Terry is reportedly being offered the permanent head coaching position at the University of Texas. The high-level university source told Horns247 that negotiations are already ongoing and an announcement of Terry’s appointment could be made as early as Tuesday if an agreement can be reached quickly. The source praised Terry’s leadership, calling him a “classy” coach who did an “amazing” job leading the program.
Terry took over as acting head coach after Chris Beard was fired with cause in December 2021, following charges of assault on his fiancée. Terry became interim head coach and soon impressed Texas fans and players with his leadership, cultivating strong relationships with the team and leading them through a 22-8 reign that culminated in an Elite Eight defeat to Miami in the NCAA Tournament.
Several Texas players have publicly endorsed Terry for the position, including Dylan Disu, Dillon Mitchell, and Arterio Morris, saying that he is the right person for the job on and off the court. Senior Timmy Allen also praised Terry’s ability to lead the team through a difficult time, saying that Terry gave them “a steady voice” and “confidence” when they needed it the most.
Terry’s long tenure as an assistant at Texas under Rick Barnes and previous experience as head coach of Fresno State and UTEP, where he compiled an overall record of 163-156 (.511), has also garnered support from former coaches. Steve Fisher, who led Michigan to the 1989 national title and developed a relationship with Terry after coaching against him at San Diego State, told Horns247 that Terry is ready to take over the Longhorns’ program.
Texas fans will undoubtedly be keen to see Terry in the head coach role and build upon the success he has already achieved with the team. If the appointment goes ahead, it will be interesting to see how Terry continues to lead the Longhorns in the future.
