The Philadelphia Phillies began the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) season with disappointment after losing to the Texas Rangers. Despite taking a 5-0 lead and striking out former National League Cy Young prize winner Jacob deGrom, the Phillies surrendered nine runs – which contributed to an 11-7 opening day defeat. Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola struggled with the new MLB pitch clock, used to speed up play; Nola has voiced concerns about having to adapt to throwing a pitch within 15 seconds with the bases empty, and especially within 20 seconds with runners on. Although Nola has been one of the Phillies’ most reliable pitchers – he held hitters to a .199/.237/.306 slash line out of the windup with the bases empty last season – the new rules could put his spot in the rotation in doubt.
