In a recent development in the world of baseball, the Minnesota Twins announced that they have placed Joey Gallo on the 10-day injured list. This is a retroactive placement, meaning that it dates back to April 8th, and interestingly enough, Gallo had been participating in drills that very evening. Nonetheless, it was determined by the club that he should take some time off to “process” and recover from his right intercostal strain, which doesn’t seem to be too severe.

Interestingly enough, Gallo, a first baseman/outfielder, had only recently signed a free-agent deal with Minnesota that lasted one year. Though he had a tough time in the year and a half that he split between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Texas Rangers, he opened his tenure with the Twins with a fantastic week. Over his first 20 plate appearances, he had five hits, including three home runs, and a pair of walks.

Gallo is also considered a Gold Glove caliber outfielder, but he has mainly played first base with Minnesota so far. Alex Kirilloff, another outfielder, opened up the season on the injured list while rehabbing from a wrist procedure that occurred last year. Both Kirilloff and second baseman Jorge Polanco are reportedly coming back soon, however, and they are both on rehab assignments with Low-A Fort Myers. They are set to return to the majors in about a week or two.

Minnesota played their most recent game with one player down, though they didn’t make any corresponding moves on the day that Gallo was placed on the injured list. It is also possible that they will turn to one of their top prospects, Edouard Julien, in the near future. Julien was ranked by Baseball America as the sport’s #97 overall prospect and was added to Minnesota’s 40-man roster last offseason. In Double-A last season, he hit .300/.441/.490 and is off to a .276/.417/.517 start in St. Paul, with eight games currently under his belt.

In conclusion, it seems that not even a week into his tenure with the Twins, Gallo has already experienced a few setbacks. However, it is reassuring to know that his injury does not seem too severe, and he should be back on the field shortly. Here’s hoping that he continues to display his great potential moving forward!
