When Margot Robbie first read the script for ‘Barbie,’ she expressed, “Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day,” convinced that the studio would never allow them to make the film. The script for the live-action Barbie movie was co-written by Greta Gerwig, who also directed the movie. She revealed that it was a terrifying experience to pen the script with so many stories and possibilities to choose from. But in fear of a potential career-ender, Gerwig and her team were fearless and bold in their decision-making.
Robbie couldn’t give any specifics about the story, but the cast looks quite promising. Besides Ryan Gosling as Ken, the star-studded lineup includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, and Will Ferrell.
For a long time, Barbie has been the ultimate symbol for modern femininity, and it has been a long time coming for a live-action movie adaptation. Mattel, the creators of Barbie, said in 2020 that the movie would depict a “journey of self-discovery” through the eyes of its protagonist.
The live-action Barbie movie is expected to release in 2023. It will be quite interesting to see how Robbie and Gerwig interpret and showcase the beloved doll’s story.
