The Colorado Buffaloes are currently going through a second round of roster overhaul, with several players announcing their transfer decisions. The team already added 27 transfers during the winter, and new head coach Deion Sanders has made it clear that they will be active in the transfer portal again this spring. The team is currently projected to be over the NCAA scholarship limit of 85, and the staff is still looking to add more players. Therefore, more attrition from the current roster is expected.
Among the group of players who announced their intention to transfer is cornerback Nikko Reed, who was one of the most impactful players on the field for the Buffs last year. Reed started all 12 games as a true sophomore and finished with 44 tackles, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions. He was also the team’s leading kickoff returner. Despite being sad to leave the program, Reed expressed confidence in the new coaching staff and his excitement for what the future holds for him.
Tight end Austin Smith and running back Jayle Stacks also announced their decisions to transfer. Smith played in 10 games during his two seasons with the Buffs as a backup tight end and caught one pass for a touchdown. Stacks, on the other hand, rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown on 35 carries last season and caught one pass for two yards.
However, the Buffaloes also made a significant addition to their roster with the commitment of former Old Dominion edge defender Deeve Harris. Harris had 32 tackles, four tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks in 10 games for the Monarchs last season and became the first player in ODU history to score twice on defense in the same season, returning an interception and a fumble for touchdowns. With two seasons of eligibility remaining, Harris will add depth to the Buffs’ defense and make an impact on the field.
In conclusion, the Buffs’ second round of roster overhaul aims to build a winning team under the leadership of the new coaching staff. Despite the expected attrition from the current roster, the staff has made it clear that they will be active in adding more players through the transfer portal to strengthen the team’s depth and quality. The addition of Deeve Harris is a good indication of the team’s efforts to build a strong and competitive roster, and fans can expect to see a lot of new faces and attitudes on the field in the upcoming season.
