Bud Light, the official beer of NFL, has been the main sponsor of the NFL Draft. However, it is facing controversies over its partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Mulvaney has garnered a deal with Nike and Bud Light. The beer giant celebrated a year of “girlhood” with a commemorative can featuring Mulvaney, which has drawn attention from consumers and celebrities alike. Country music singer John Rich has pulled cases of Bud Light from his Nashville bar as part of a boycott.
The partnership has brought negative publicity to the beer giant, causing financial loss in the market. According to Dow Jones Market Data Group, Anheuser-Busch has fallen 5.02% and lost $4.562 billion in market cap. The controversies started when Mulvaney gained prominence by interviewing President Joe Biden about LGBTQ issues in 2022. The criticisms continued when Mulvaney partnered with Nike, drawing the ire of Caitlyn Jenner.
As a response, Anheuser-Busch has clarified that Mulvaney’s commemorative cans were a gift to celebrate a personal milestone, and not for sale to the general public. The company has emphasized that they work with hundreds of influencers across their brands in various demographics.
Many individuals are now starting to express their displeasure over Bud Light’s partnership with Mulvaney. Rich said, “customers are the kings,” and his bar would put something else on the shelf if people stopped ordering Bud Light. Thus, Bud Light faces a potential backlash over their partnership with Mulvaney as it jeopardizes their financial gain and brand reputation.
